On Friday, 13 September 2024, the University of Cambridge hosted an illustrious gathering of 90 researchers from 24 esteemed partner institutions, under the auspices of the TITAN Telecoms Hub. The research community event underscored a concerted commitment to advancing telecommunications research and innovation.
The proceedings commenced with a formal presentation by TITAN Director Professor Harald Haas, who articulated TITAN’s strategic vision for the future of telecommunications. His address emphasised the integration of traditional communication systems with next-generation technologies, setting a tone of innovation, rigorous inquiry, and transformative potential.
The opening session was followed by six meticulously prepared presentations that provided comprehensive insights into the TITAN Lighthouse Projects. These projects represented the forefront of research:
Network Intelligence and End-to-End Integration: Focused on leveraging AI-native networks and intelligent multi-access controllers, aiming to enhance network performance, efficiency, and reliability through advanced optimisation techniques.
User-Centric Service-Aware Radio Access Control: Emphasising the development of sustainable and inclusive wireless networks and addressing the imperative for high-quality, energy-efficient communication services that extend to underserved communities.
Optical Wireless Networks Integration: Exploring the utilisation of optical wireless technologies, promising significant enhancements in bandwidth and latency reduction, which are critical for next-generation applications.
Fibre Enabled Connectivity Integration: Optimising fibre-optic network integration to support ultra-fast and reliable data transmission across extended distances, catering to the increasing demands of modern digital infrastructures.
Non-Terrestrial Network Design and Optimisation: Addressing the challenge of global connectivity and investigating the use of satellite and high-altitude platform systems to extend robust communication services beyond traditional terrestrial networks.
Quantum Networks Integration: Pioneering the integration of quantum technologies to enhance network security and performance, with a particular focus on developing innovative quantum routers and secure communications protocols.
Each presentation highlighted the collaborative spirit and technical acumen driving the TITAN research community. In addition to the formal presentations, the event featured structured breakout sessions designed to foster detailed discussions on specific areas of interest. These sessions included:
Mobile World Congress Insights: A session dedicated to exploring research that holds the potential to be showcased at the Mobile World Congress, featuring interactive Q&A segments and live audience feedback.
Standardisation Workshops: Facilitated by leading experts including Professor Haas and Peter Love, these workshops examined the processes of influencing standardisation bodies such as IEEE, 3GPP, and ETSI. Discussions focused on identifying barriers, sharing best practices, and establishing effective strategies for research integration into standardisation protocols.
Intellectual Property (IP) Breakout Session: This session addressed the challenges associated with patenting and the complexities of cross-institutional intellectual property management. Participants deliberated on the low rate of patent applications, the protracted nature of patent approvals, and potential models for a centralised IP pool.
Complementing the formal agenda were 34 poster exhibits that provided succinct overviews of ongoing research initiatives. These exhibits served as catalysts for informal networking, enabling participants to engage in detailed technical discussions and establish potential avenues for future collaboration. The event was a paradigm of scholarly excellence and collaborative endeavour in the field of telecommunications, and not only showcased pioneering research across various domains but also laid the groundwork for future innovations through comprehensive discussions on standardisation, intellectual property, and next-generation network solutions.
TITAN is part of the Federated Telecoms Hubs (FTH) alongside CHEDDAR, HASC, and JOINER. Together, we conduct world-leading R&D and create a new knowledge-sharing framework, roadmap technology, develop skills, and engage with standards while instilling a commercialisation-focused mindset across academia.
