Bandwidth constraints can have a detrimental impact on various crucial aspects of modern life. These include healthcare that relies on remote patient monitoring systems, as well as limitations on industrial automation that can affect economic growth. In addition, slower internet speeds in both residential and commercial settings can also be a significant issue.
New research by Dr Yifan Huang (University of Strathclyde), Professor Majid Safari (University of Edinburgh), Dr Iman Tavakkolnia (University of Cambridge), along with Professor Harald Haas (University of Cambridge), explores innovative methods to address conventional bandwidth limitations in wireless networks. These methods have the potential to significantly improve high-speed wireless communication in offices, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation. This research proposes a new transmission technique for Light Fidelity (LiFi) systems by leveraging a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and joint wavelength multiplexing approach that optimises system parameters across space and frequency dimensions. By using advanced spatial clustering and wavelength division strategies, along with a state-of-the-art optimisation tool, the study demonstrates a significant improvement in data transmission rates in a networking deployment where user locations and device orientations randomly change.
