Non-Terrestrial Network Design and Optimisation

The six Lighthouse Projects spearhead cutting-edge research. The projects tackle high-level topics and experimentation, driving targeted Mini Projects to solve specific challenges within the field.

Lighthouse Project 5 (LP5) focuses on non-terrestrial network (NTN) design and optimisation. Research into “Non-Terrestrial Network Design and Optimisation” explores the development and enhancement of communication systems that operate beyond traditional ground-based infrastructure, such as satellite and high-altitude platform networks.

LP5 Lead: Professor Lajos Hanzo, University of Southampton.

This research is vital for expanding global connectivity, particularly in remote or underserved regions where terrestrial networks are not feasible or cost-effective. By designing and optimising non-terrestrial networks, this work aims to deliver reliable, high-speed communication services across vast distances, bridging the connectivity gap for millions of people worldwide.

LP5’s work looks at:

  • Optimum resource allocation for low latency links
  • Satellite data link optimisation using AI/ML
  • Aerial platforms/HAPS integration
  • Reliable high-speed link from ground to satellite

LP5 leads the following Mini Projects:

  • MP23 – Network Slicing aided multicomponent optimisation of NTNs/ space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs)
  • MP24 – Adaptive physical layer design for NTN/SAGIN systems
  • MP25 – Task specific security solutions for Space-Air ground networks
  • MP26 – Semantic aware Modulation Schemes for Space-Air-Ground Networks
  • MP27 – Quantum Signal Processing and Optimisation Algorithms for Non Terrestrial Communications
  • MP28 – NTN design and Optimisation
  • MP29 – Low complexity channel estimation and data detection in high doppler NTN

Each of these projects will soon have its own web pages. Coming soon!
