Fibre Enabled Connectivity Integration

The six Lighthouse Projects spearhead cutting-edge research. The projects tackle high-level topics and experimentation, driving targeted Mini Projects to solve specific challenges within the field.

Lighthouse Project 4 (LP4) focuses on fibre enabled connectivity integration. The research aims to enhance ultra-fast, reliable, and high-capacity data transmission.

LP4: Professor Periklis Petropoulos, University of Southampton.

Fiber optics are crucial for meeting the growing need for high-speed internet and data services due to their ability to transmit large amounts of data over long distances with minimal loss.

This work focuses on improving the integration of fiber-optic networks into existing systems to optimise network performance, reduce latency, and support the deployment of emerging technologies such as 5G, smart cities, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

LP4’s work looks at:

  • Hollow-core and multi-core fibre for low latency data links
  • Dynamic spectrum management
  • Integration of sensing techniques for network monitoring

LP4 leads the following Mini Projects:

  • MP19 – Technologies for all optical access systems
  • MP20 – High Capacity transceivers for next generation optical access networks
  • MP21 – Chaotic digital filtering for realising ultimate “security by design” networks
  • MP22 – Data-carrying optical signal based sensing in legacy fibre networks

Each of these projects will soon have its own web pages. Coming soon!
