Optical Wireless Networks Integration

The six Lighthouse Projects spearhead cutting-edge research. The projects tackle high-level topics and experimentation, driving targeted Mini Projects to solve specific challenges within the field.

Lighthouse Project 3 (LP3) focuses on optical wireless networks integration. By integrating optical wireless technologies into existing communication networks, this research paves the way for faster, more secure, and highly reliable data transmission.

LP3 Lead: Professor Jaafar Elmirghani, King’s College London.

Using light for communication instead of traditional radio frequencies can significantly increase bandwidth, reduce latency, and alleviate congestion in densely populated areas. This is particularly important for supporting the growing demands of data-intensive applications like virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities.

LP3’s work looks at:

  • Net-zero data links
  • New device technologies
  • Terabit per second optical wireless
  • Satellite and underwater networks
  • Communication and sensing – LiFi-Lidar

LP3 leads the following Mini Projects:

  • MP11 – Low complex, resilient free-space optical backhaul
  • MP12 – Realisation of 100 µs latency and 1 cm positioning accuracy for industrial optical wireless communication
  • MP13 – Integration of high-speed micro-LED transmitters with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (micro-LED RIS)
  • MP14 – Integrated sensing and communications for efficient optical wireless networking
  • MP15 – Waveform design for resilient underwater optical wireless communications
  • MP16 – End-to-end network slicing across multiple environments
  • MP17 – Modelling tools for optical wireless networks integration
  • MP18 – Photonic Lanterns for turbulence mitigation in FSOC

Each of these projects will soon have its own web pages. Coming soon!
